Sailing in Cairns is alive and well…. and to prove it, the Cairns Yacht Club and the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron are celebrating with an annual event in the FNQ Sailing Calendar. Early in 2016, Totally Workwear Cairns, locally owned by Chris and June Kingsbury, became the naming sponsor for the regatta. Other sponsors include – Cairns Yacht Club, Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron, Ports North, Star 102.7, Coconut Slipway, Officeworks, Yachting Queensland, Mickey Ink and Maritime Safety Queensland.
THE TOTALLY WORKWEAR SAIL CAIRNS REGATTA is held during the latter part of September each year encouraging participation in an environmentally friendly sport, suitable for all ages, which he
lps to promote a healthy and active lifestyle in our local community.
The regatta provides another racing opportunity for sailors who have competed in the Mickey Ink Port Douglas race week in May, the Airlie Beach Race Week, [held in August], The Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, [also held in August], and the Sea Link Magnetic Island Race Week, [held in early September of each year].
The yachts shall be competing for the prize of the Totally Workwear Trophy and the dinghies for the Mayors Cup.
The regatta is a colourful spectacle of racing sailed on the waters of Trinity Bay, out to Yorkey’s Knob, and around Double Island and Admiralty Island. The races start from inside the Inlet , proceed out through the leads to False Cape, Yorkey’s Knob, Double Island and around Admiralty Island for the smaller dinghies. The dinghies, multihull boats and keelboats can be viewed from the Marlin Marina as they line up for their starting positions on the start line. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun with four days of sailing and social events at the end of the days racing. Check out our website for more info – www.sailcairns.com.au.
In its inaugural year [2015], the Regatta treated tourists and locals leaving on boats to visit the local reefs to a spectacular display of spinnakers at the start of the spinnaker race, as well as the last minutes of the races as the yachts jostled for first place on re-entering the Marina area at the end of the days’ racing.
In 2016 the starts for all races, weather and winds being favourable shall start from out on the water in line with Mondo’s, so tourists and locals can watch the races begin.
Working in partnership with the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron, they have extended an invitation to all Cairns Yacht Club members to join the Australia Day celebrations.
As part of the 2015 calendar of activities, it was proposed that we have a sail in company to Fitzroy Is.The idea would be that boats from Cairns based clubd would leave Cairns at 1100 for a sail in company
We could then meet up with boats from Yorkeys Knob Boat Club and Port Douglas at channel marker number 6 & proceed as a fleet to Fitzroy. ( All boaties welcome – sail and steamers )
Depending on the numbers we could advise Fitzroy & they could do a BBQ for us. There is a bar on the island, and they are family friendly: ( they also have a TV & the Broncos are playing Sat night)
If you are interested in join this fund social event please contact Bill Munro – CYC Yacht Fleet Captain
